Texas Business Leaders Call for Permanent Protection for Dreamers

The debate regarding young immigrants

The term Dreamers refers to young immigrants who were brought to the US without legal documentation when they were minors and who, in their vast majority, have lived in North America for many years and have little memory of their countries of origin.

The social controversy around Dreamers is gigantic mainly because, on the one hand, there is a part of the population that asks the government to offer them a path to legal documentation since it was not their decision to cross the US’ borders without prior authorization. On the other hand, there is a part of the population that thinks that undocumented immigrants should not receive benefits or have the opportunity to legally reside in the country, regardless of whether they are minors or not.

Currently, the only direct option for Dreamers is DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), a deportation relief program that allows them to legally reside in the US for two years with the possibility of extension, so long as they meet certain eligibility requirements. Through DACA, Dreamers can also request Employment Authorization Documents and access other social benefits.

However, this program was on the tightrope under the Donald Trump administration (2017-2021), which tried to eradicate DACA by all possible means, but, after a legal battle that seemed endless, several local courts ruled in favor of Dreamers.

Texas businesses call for permanent solutions for Dreamers

Now that President Joe Biden is leading the nation, dozens of local companies and business leaders are calling on his administration to offer permanent protection to Dreamers. It is worth mentioning that the Biden administration also supports legalization for eligible young immigrants.

To give a specific example, several important Texas business leaders, including the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, are urging Congress to provide a path to citizenship for Dreamers, primarily those covered by DACA.

These companies state that the economic impact of DACA recipients is absolutely important to the growth and development of Texan businesses and that it should be a priority for the Biden administration and Congress to pass immigration bills to permanently protect these workers, who are essential to the nation’s economic system.
