The Trump administration restrictions on business immigration

Clearly, the arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic tremendously affected most sectors of our society. For instance, the immigration sector received several impacts from emergency measures implemented by the current administration of the US.

Speaking specifically about the business immigration sector, President Trump announced, at the end of June 2020, that most employment visas are suspended until the end of the year, although some restrictions have already been lifted in recent weeks.

The Trump administration claims that the massive issuance of work visas by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) causes competition between foreign workers and American citizens, which affects local market and increases the current unemployment rate.

Therefore, President Trump decided to implement this emergency measure to protect the employment of the local population, encourage companies to offer wages only to citizens, and avoid job competition.

Yet despite the Trump administration’s apparent intent to protect the American population during the current juncture, dozens of companies report an alarming shortage of skilled workforce.

Recognized companies commented on work visa restrictions

Multiple globally recognized companies commented, also in June, about restrictions implemented by the Trump administration on the business immigration sector.

Most of the companies involved in the legal complaint specialize in technology and research, which greatly benefit from highly skilled foreign workers.

In fact, some of them stated that workforce shortages could force them to move their businesses to countries like Canada, China or even India, which do value talent from abroad.

Companies decide to support Biden’s presidential campaign

The same companies that expressed dissatisfaction with restrictions in the immigration sector have now decided to support the campaign of Joe Biden, belonging to the Democratic political party.

We are talking about technology companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and many others.

Representatives of the companies signed a letter declaring that they fully support Joe Biden’s political campaign for the elections that will take place in November, 2020.

They state that the Trump administration is affecting the US through its restrictions on work visas. Besides that, they argue that the competitiveness, development and effectiveness of the country when it comes to the business sector is based on the inclusion of foreign talent and that, without this talent, the country would cease to be the world power that it is today.

The official statement declares: “Information technology is thoroughly globalized. Academic computer science departments attract talented students, many of whom immigrate and become American inventors and captains of industry (…) Joe Biden and Kamala Harris listen to experts before setting public policy, essential when science and technology may help with many problems facing our nation today.”
