Survey Reveals Americans Want More Immigration

Gallup poll results support immigration

Annual survey on the opinion of citizens regarding immigration

Gallup, a company dedicated to data analysis and advice, conducts a series of public opinion polls in order to monitor views of the American population on issues about politics, economy, society, environment, inter alia.

This firm conducts a survey that analyzes the opinion of local citizens regarding immigration. Respondents, through telephone interviews, answer two main questions:

  1. If, in the opinion of respondents, immigration should increase, decrease or remain at current level.
  2. If, in the opinion of respondents, immigration is something positive, negative or neutral for the US.

In 2020, this survey was carried out between May 28 and June 4, amid the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory.

Survey results support immigration

For the first time in the survey’s history, results show that the American population wants more immigration. Let’s see some details:

  • 34% of respondents support increased immigration.
  • 28% of respondents support decreased immigration.
  • Immigration should remain at the current level according to 36% of respondents.

This represents a substantial change compared to last year’s results, which revealed that 27% of repondents supported increased immigration. It means that there was an increase of 7%.

This year’s figure represents the highest since 1965 as, most years, the percentage of people that wanted to reduce immigration was higher. Adding to that, 77% of respondents consider immigration to be something positive for the US, which represents almost 8 people out of 10.

These results undoubtedly contradict the opinion of President Trump, who assures that immigration is negative for the country and that the US government must use all the tools at its disposal to reduce it, which has unleashed a gigantic social controversy.

It is important to clarify that this survey was conducted before the Trump administration implemented restrictions on the business immigration sector, highly skilled foreign workers, winners of the Diversity Visa Lottery, and immigration programs such as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

It  means that respondents were positive about immigration even before the Trump administration substantially restricted the entry of legal immigrants to the US.
