Immigrants Receive Fake Deportation Letters

Massachusetts residents receive fake deportation notices

Dozens of immigrants residing in Chelsea, a city in Massachusetts, received letters, allegedly from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stating that they had to leave the US on their own by October 31. 2020.

Otherwise, they would have to face deportation proceedings or would be detained by Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams at their work or home.

Chelsea police recently found out about this issue, after the deadline mentioned in the letter expired. The entity in charge of protecting the residents’ safety and well-being assures that DHS has nothing to do with these notices and that surely they are groups or organizations that want to instigate and instill fear among immigrant communities through fraud and scams.

What was the reaction of the Chelsea police?

Chelsea police chief states that an investigation is underway to locate people involved in this maneuver, which not only threatens the integrity and safety of immigrants, but also violates local law by impersonating a federal entity.

Adding to that, the police chief states that his team is fully available to local residents: “You can trust the Chelsea Police, we work hand-in-hand with our members of the community (…) We do not enforce immigration law, that’s beyond our realm of responsibility.”

Immigrant response to this threat

Despite the fact that it is a fake deportation notice, that does not diminish the concern among immigrants who received it, mainly because their integrity is in danger and people behind this event know where they live and where they work, which could pose a risk to them.

They ask for protection from the local police department and ask for a comprehensive investigation to find the whereabouts of people who instill fear and distress among their families.
