Survey reveals growing support for immigration

A national survey conducted by CATO Institute reveals that American citizens’ views on immigration have changed substantially since the 90s. Currently, there is growing support to expand immigration in the US.

A total of 2,600 American adults participated in the survey (Republicans, Democrats and Independents), who answered a series of questions about immigration and also had the opportunity to give their opinions on certain open-ended questions.

The survey results reveal that the local population is increasingly supportive of immigration and, at the same time, there are still extremist ideals that lean towards strict and restrictive immigration policies.

Let’s look at some important facts:

  • In the mid-1990s, only 10% of the American population supported increasing immigration. Currently, 29% of voters support increasing immigration in the US, while 38% support maintaining current immigration levels. This figure increased mainly thanks to the opinion of Democratic voters.
  • Overall, 91% of voters support immigration, either low levels (68%) or high levels (23%), while only 9% of voters do not support immigration at all.
  • 53% of voters state that migrating is a right, but only 33% support the idea of removing current restrictions on immigration after the health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
  • Regarding legal immigration processes, 67% of the American public state that they are “fairly difficult”. Speaking specifically about processes related to business immigration, 66% of voters state that local companies should be able to hire qualified employees when they need it, without prioritizing American workers. Adding to that, 62% of voters state that local companies should be able to hire as many immigrant workers as they need to meet market demands.
  • 72% of voters think that immigrants come to the US to find job stability and improve their lives, while only 27% of voters think that immigrants come to the country to access public benefits and obtain social services.

This is not the first poll to reveal public support for immigration

The CATO Institute survey is not the only one that has revealed that the American population increasingly supports the expansion of immigration and the ideal of improving the local immigration system.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talked about an annual poll conducted by Gallup since 1965, which reveals that, in 2020, 34% of voters supported increased immigration. That was the first time in the poll’s history that the American public wanted more immigration, rather than wanting to maintain current immigration levels or reduce them through strict policies.
