Strict Policies Might Increase Illegal Immigration

Study shows that strict policies increase unauthorized immigration

Current immigration policies

It is well known that since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the US, the current government, led by President Donald Trump, has implemented emergency measures that are related to immigration policies.

In addition to that, prior to the arrival of the global pandemic, President Trump had already modified several immigration processes, increasing restrictions and requirements for visa applications, building the border wall that separates the US from Mexico and organizing border forces to prevent illegal immigration.

Thus, since the President took office in 2017, he has worked tirelessly to reduce mass legal immigration and eradicate illegal immigration, mostly from Central America.

Currently, some of the immigration processes are gradually returning to normal, but in general, most foreigners are not allowed to enter the US because of the health crisis.

For instance, the majority of asylum seekers currently reside in Mexico under the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), and the regulations for asylum claims have increased substantially over the past two months.

Taking this into account, a recent study shows the innate connection between the immigration policies of the US and the trend of illegal immigration.

The NBER presents its opinion on the matter

A study conducted in early 2020 by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) shows the impact of immigration policies in contrast to official figures on illegal immigration.

The report’s results demonstrate that increasing border restrictions and decreasing the number of visas available to immigrants only fuels mass illegal immigration.

In addition to that, the study mentions that deportation policies also increase unauthorized immigration because preventing deported immigrants from applying to legal residency processes for a considerable period of time, only forces them to try to migrate without legal documentation to the US.

In fact, at the conclusion of the report, the NBER experts state: “the costs of deportation are even larger because deportation also causes migrants to lose access to the possibility of migrating to the U.S. legally in the future”.

Hence, the report clarifies that expanding legal visa processes and providing opportunities for immigrants could substantially reduce illegal immigration.

Illegal immigration and the global Coronavirus pandemic

Several experts and critics around the country declare that the restrictions on immigration policies, which the current government has implemented at the cost of the global pandemic, will be counterproductive for the US.

They argue that banning legal immigration is going to make thousands of people decide to cross the country’s borders without legal documentation.

In fact, a Caravan from Honduras with more than 1,000 people is about to reach the borders of the US and they intend to enter without authorization.

Other than that, suspending the issuance of legal visas could also spread a wave of massive unauthorized immigration during the months after the Coronavirus outbreak.

Therefore, it is important for the US administration to carefully review the implications of abruptly restricting legal immigration.
