Senator Asks the OIG to Investigate ICE

Senator sends a letter to the OIG to investigate ICE medical procedures

Internal complaint due to ICE’s medical protocols

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about news that came to light regarding massive medical procedures performed by ICE health experts.

To give a broader perspective, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the branch of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in charge of overseeing immigration detention centers around the country.

These centers typically house undocumented immigrants facing deportation proceedings or who are awaiting a response to their immigration appeals.

A nurse who worked for one of the Georgia-based ICE detention centers recently stated that health professionals perform massive sterilizations or uterus extractions on immigrant women who do not need such a procedure.

Naturally, this news is alarming and caught the attention of hundreds of activists in the US, as well as political officials and immigration attorneys.

In addition to that, it is important to clarify that since the arrival of the pandemic in the North American territory, ICE has been involved in multiple controversies due to improper handling of hygiene, protection and health protocols within its facilities in the midst of the health crisis caused by the COVID-19.

Thus, this accusation makes the situation worse for the federal agency and it might have to face multiple legal processes due to these circumstances.

If you need to start an immigration journey in the US, the best alternative is for you to always follow legal processes with the constant accompaniment of experts and avoid risky situations. Motion Law Immigration can help you.

Senator calls for OIG investigation inside ICE facility

Due to the alarming risk posed by this news, Senator Cory Booker sent a letter to the DHS Office of Inspector General, requesting for it to start an investigation as soon as possible to find the roots of these procedures performed on immigrant women.

Besides that, the senator calls for a thorough investigation regarding:

  • ICE medical records.
  • Protocols implemented by the agency during the massive Coronavirus outbreak.
  • Treatments offered to detained immigrants who test positive for the COVID-19.
  • Records of why multiple hysterectomies (removal of the uterus) have been performed on immigrant women who do not have any underlying health problems.

The US Senator openly states in the official letter: “Given the serious nature of the complaint, I urge your office to immediately conduct a thorough in-person investigation of the Irwin County Detention Center—including in-person interviews with relevant witnesses following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidance—and to further investigate DHS leaderships’ knowledge of the allegations as well as their possible involvement in the abuses.”

For now, the OIG has yet to officially respond to this request, but the DHS has already announced its intervention in the case.
