Scientific Knowledge, Immigration, and the Incoming Administration

The incoming administration opens a door to science and immigration

The scientific community greatly supports business immigration

Under the premise of protecting the economy and American workers, the current administration of the US has used all the tools at its disposal to reduce immigration, not only illegal, but also to substantially restrict legal processes, including business immigration.

In the opinion of President Donald Trump and his cabinet, business immigration hurts local workers as companies often pay lower wages to foreign workers, narrowing the possibilities for highly skilled American workers.

However, despite the opinion of the Trump administration, local companies state that foreign talent is extremely necessary for the development and economic growth of the US. For instance, through the H-1B visa, the immigration system allows local businesses to hire highly skilled foreign workers as long as there are no trained local personnel. Thus, reducing business immigration does not help local workers to have more opportunities, but in the opinion of local companies, it simply vacates essential jobs for industries such as technology, science, research, and engineering.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about a report by the Biophysical Society that exposes repercussions of the Trump administration’s restrictions on business immigration, which could prevent the country from advancing technologically and, therefore, it would no longer be a world power compared to countries with more welcoming immigration policies such as China or Canada.

The incoming administration opens a door to science and immigration

Local companies and scientific and technological communities celebrate the results of the most recent presidential elections of the US, which took place in early November, 2020. The local population elected Joe Biden as the next leader of the nation, who belongs to the Democratic political party and has a different view than Trump when it comes to immigration.

The president-elect, like local companies, supports immigration and states that it is an advantage and a strength for the US. Thus, he plans to remove Trump’s restrictions on business immigration once he takes office on January 20, 2021.

Therefore, in recent weeks, multiple experts from fields such as science, technology and engineering have given their opinion about the incoming administration and hope that the president-elect, along with his cabinet, will expand immigration alternatives for highly qualified foreign workers, who are a key piece for these industries.

For instance , a recent report from The Hill called “The path forward for science under a new administration,” exposes the benefits that could come with the Biden administration for the scientific field. In fact, speaking specifically about highly qualified foreign workers and international students, the report states that “These experts contribute substantially to the pursuit of scientific knowledge and application. Reducing unnecessary burdens to the visa process is vital to accelerating scientific progress.”
