Recognized Companies Sign Document Against Work Visa Restrictions

Companies like Amazon, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft signed a document supporting lawsuit against Trump's policies

The last presidential proclamation

The massive outbreak of Coronavirus was sudden and abrupt in most countries around the world, and clearly, governments were forced to implement strict emergency measures to protect the local population and act quickly to counter the impact of the crisis.

In the case of the US, President Donald Trump is primarily focusing on protecting American workers, as well as alleviating the economic crisis and lowering the current unemployment rate.

That is the reason why President Trump announced the suspension of work visas issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), at least until the end of the year.

With this measure, the current administration seeks to protect local workers, as well as to encourage companies to offer wages to the American population instead of qualified foreigners who travel to the country with a legal work permit.

Lawsuit filed by business entities

In one of our most recent articles, we talk about a lawsuit recently filed by entities like the National Association of Manufacturers, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the National Retail Federation.

The lawsuit argues that restrictions on work visas only hurt the local market and delay both the development and competitiveness of the US.

The entities involved in the lawsuit state that American business success depends largely on the workforce of qualified foreigners who contribute to the socioeconomic development of the country.

World-renowned companies support the lawsuit

On Monday, August 10, 2020, multiple world-renowned companies signed a letter of support for the lawsuit against the restrictions implemented by the Trump administration on work visas.

Among the companies involved are:

  • Amazon.
  • Netflix.
  • Adobe.
  • Facebook.
  • Apple.
  • Microsoft.
  • Twitter.

In the official document, these companies state: “Congress enacted and refined the H-1B, H-2B, and L-1 visa programs, recognizing that they would benefit the U.S. economy. Study after study and expert after expert have confirmed as much: these programs have driven innovation, increased employment, and fueled economic growth, with scant evidence of detrimental effects on domestic employees.”

Therefore, multiple companies assure that they are suffering from a shortage of qualified workforce and that possibly many of them will have to move their facilities to other countries that appreciate business immigration and recognize its benefits.

Adding to that, the companies argue that this government decision affects, in the short and long term, the country’s economic system and worsens the current crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic.
