Protests in Front of New Immigrant Detention Center

Protests in front of minor detention center

New immigrant detention center in Texas

The construction of a new immigrant detention center in El Paso, Texas, was recently completed. This center is intended to house minors who arrive at the borders unaccompanied or who are separated from their families under the “zero tolerance policy” of the Trump administration.

It is important to explain that the US law has certain protocols that must be followed by border forces when it comes to unaccompanied immigrant minors. According to local law, minors cannot be detained by federal entities for more than 72 hours, therefore, they must be transferred to centers belonging to the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), where they must wait until they receive a response to their immigration requests.

The new center for immigrant minors has the capacity to house approximately 500 children (currently housing 10 children) and is part of the 170 centers of the ORR.

Protests in front of the new center

On Saturday, October 3, 2020, a caravan of more than 50 cars and horses protested in front of this new minor detention center, claiming that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency violates human rights through family separation.

The Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR), one of the organizations that supports immigration reform in the US, was part of the protest. In fact, its director stated: “We went out to protest energetically the situation in which migrants find themselves in detention, especially for the ten or eleven children who are currently in detention. This is a private prison that the government gave a concession to detain children and we believe that it is a criminal act to detain and put children in jail.”

Similar situations around the country

Border forces such as ICE are currently part of a gigantic social controversy, mainly since the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory. That is the reason why there have been multiple protests recently. Activists claim that the Trump administration is threatening the integrity of the most vulnerable immigrant communities, who are seeking international protection while trying to flee the danger of their countries.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about multiple protests around the US calling to abolish ICE and remove immigration policies that, in the opinion of activists, violate immigrant rights.
