Private Prison Companies Support Trump’s Political Campaign

Private Prison Companies want Trump to win elections

The rise in immigration detention during Trump’s presidency

One of the factors that helped President Donald Trump win the 2016 election was his stance regarding the local immigration sector.

The Trump government has substantially transformed the immigration system of the US, from immigration processes based on family, business, student, to humanitarian programs such as political asylum, refuge or Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Aside from modifications to legal immigration processes, the Trump administration has focused heavily on illegal immigration, hiring thousands of border agents and increasing the detention of undocumented immigrants across the US.

In fact, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency has the power to conduct massive operations with the intention of detaining foreigners who managed to cross the borders and are currently living without legal documentation in the country.

ICE also oversees immigration detention centers, where undocumented foreigners, who are detained during operations, go. Due to the increase in immigration detention during the term of President Donald Trump, his government has had to resort to the services of private prison companies such as GEO Group or CoreCivic.

What is the job of private prison companies?

These private prison companies put their facilities at the service of border entities, such as ICE, to detain hundreds of undocumented immigrants, who usually wait in detention centers for their deportation processes to be completed or the response to their immigration appeal.

It is important to clarify that the government normally pays between $120 and $140 a day for each detained immigrant. Hence, in 2019, these companies earned around $1.3 billion for providing their services to the Trump administration.

Naturally, due to the amount of revenue these companies receive, current immigration policies have sparked disagreement among activist groups, immigrant rights advocates, and critics, who claim that the government would not be investing such amount in immigration detention if it implemented more welcoming and less arbitrary policies.

Private prison companies fund Trump’s campaign

The income of private prison companies currently depend 30% on ICE contracts, funded by the federal government. That is why these companies contribute large amounts of money to boost the Trump administration’s political campaign for the next US presidential elections, which will take place in November 2020.

Clearly, these companies don’t want the Democratic political party nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, to win, mainly because he has stated multiple times that he plans to stop contracts with private prison companies.
