John Oliver Comments on Trump’s Immigration Policies

Comedian talks about current political asylum policies

Trump’s policies hit ‘Last Week Tonight’

‘Last Week Tonight’ is a television program that offers a satirical point of view regarding current news, including national policies, events, government decisions, inter alia.

Its host, John Oliver, is known for using comedy and humor as an information medium, which on many occasions creates controversy and challenges some of the current circumstances in the US.

His style has made him one of the most influential comedians in the country. Oliver has openly expressed, on multiple occasions, his opinion regarding President Trump, his administration and the way in which he has transformed several sectors of society as we know it. That is the case of immigration, a subject that has been exposed many times during his program.

Referring to President Trump, Oliver comments: “It’s hard to look for the funny side of someone who doesn’t seem to have any kind of principles, any kind of clarity of mind about what the world means to him (…) So in general I would say that his government is not good even for comedians, just as we all know that it is not good for the world.”

John Oliver discusses current political asylum policies

In the latest chapter of “Last Week Tonight”, which is released weekly, Oliver commented on political asylum, changes and policies implemented by the Trump administration, and current circumstances of asylum seekers.

His point of view is quite interesting because, initially, he explains parameters and requirements to request political asylum, as well as the reasons why immigrants choose to request international protection through humanitarian programs such as asylum.

Typically, immigrants decide to embark on a political asylum journey while trying to flee danger, persecution, abuse, or violence of their countries. Oliver also lays out examples of asylum seekers currently detained by federal entities under President Trump’s immigration policies.

After explaining in depth the political asylum process, Oliver mentions changes implemented by the Trump administration. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Implementation of express deportations, mainly after the massive outbreak of Coronavirus in the North American territory.
  • Increase in restrictions and requirements for immigrants to request political asylum.
  • Implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which forces asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until they have a hearing with a local judge and can present their immigration cases.
  • Separation of immigrant families at the borders of the US.

Adding to that, Oliver openly supports Democratic political party candidate Joe Biden. He states: “Obviously, Biden will have to do a lot more (…) But we can’t begin to fix the damage done by this administration until we replace the administration itself. If we even want a shot at change, it is on us to vote and then advocate like lives depend on it.”
