Price Increase for DACA Renewal Requests

DACA

Immigrants are always looking for the best resource to go to the US to meet their goals and help their families.

Throughout the country’s history, immigration services have been transformed, grown, and divided into various branches.

One of the most widely used programs for immigrants is DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

This program (to have legal residence in the US) states that if an immigrant entered the country illegally when he/she was a minor, he/she can apply for a two-year permit with the possibility to work in most cases.

DACA works only for minors who are already inside the US.

After the two-year permit is over, immigrants can file a petition to renew it.

Trump’s administration has made many changes for DACA in the past year. In fact there was a decision to cancel it, however the US Supreme Court recently reversed this decision.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is currently accepting DACA renewal requests. Only immigrants who previously used the benefits of the program can reapply.

If someone has not had DACA in the past and wishes to apply, new applications are not currently being accepted, but that decision is subject to change.

New decisions for DACA

Now, the current government, in its ideal of curbing immigration in general, has decided to increase the rates for the application of DACA.

  • Trump declared during March 2020 a change in the application fee for the program.
  • The current price to apply to Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals is $ 495.00.
  • The proposed price from now on is $ 765.00. It has not been officially approved, but is under review.
  • The change generates a 55% increase in the price of the applications.
  • President Trump assures that he wants to increase the price of applications to immigrants every two years from now on.

Defenders of Immigrants

Immigrant advocates declare that raising the price of applications to legal residency programs will only spread and incite illegal immigration.

They also argue that if they are going to raise the price it would be better to do it gradually so that the impact on the requests is not so noticeable or seems like arbitrary.

Most immigrants who apply for this residency petition do not have high-paying jobs; in fact, they are usually young people who work in commercial places where they are paid the minimum monthly income. Therefore, generating more income is in itself a problem for them, since they normally work full time.

The Supreme Court

The US Supreme Court of Justice has had many requests from the government regarding DACA. Many decisions have been made in a very short time, therefore, the Supreme Court decided and announced that they will give a fixed response to the DACA processes in June 2020.

It is a decisive moment in the history of the world, many changes are happening rapidly, so it is important to always be well informed and have the correct guidance.
