Delayed Immigration Hearings

Coronavirus closes one immigration court

Immigration Overview

The current world circumstances bring several changes and the global situation is leading us to make many important decisions for our future as humanity.

One of the situations that we must pay close attention to, as a society, is to global immigration.

The US is a country where many immigrants arrive every day hoping to build a better future for their families.

They normally apply to residence permit through government entities when they want to get a legal identification in the country.

Residence Waiting Times

The number of immigrants awaiting a response from the government at this time regarding their cases is very massive.

From the beginning, Trump’s administration has been trying to delay immigration processes to prevent mass immigration to the country. However, the government did not analyze in depth the repercussions of this decision.

The reality is that there are so many applications for residence permits that the immigration system is currently collapsing.

In addition to the current world situation, the processes are getting longer for immigrants to receive a response for their residence permits requests.

Immigrants waiting for Asylum

There are thousands of immigrants currently waiting for a response regarding their asylum requests.

However, the government has created new policies to curb immigration at all costs. For example, one of the policies that is negatively affecting the immigrant population the most is “Remain in Mexico”

It refers to immigrants seeking asylum in the US. They must wait at the Mexican border while receiving a response from the immigration entities.

There are approximately 60,000 people waiting at the border immigration centers.

Immigrants are in a very risky situation due to the spread of the Coronavirus, because they are being held in overcrowded centers.

Delays in Hearings

The US Supreme Court of Justice has declared that the Seattle Immigration Court will be closed until April 10, 2020 due to the spread of the Coronavirus.

Also, multiple Courts across the country will adjourn hearings to prevent the spread of the virus.

For immigrants who are not detained, their hearings will be postponed, as the Supreme Court declared.

Denied Requests

When an immigrant receives a negative response from the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS), a deportation process begins (if the person is already in the US).

Currently, due to the Coronavirus, the Supreme Court of Justice is rushing to complete the deportation processes as quickly as possible.

The latest statement mentions that if a state finds an immigrant using false citizen identification, the deportation process must be started immediately.

Consequences of delays

Immigrant citizens continue to have their rights regardless of the delay in responses from the USCIS.

Even if the world is focused on other situations, immigrants still have access to government programs to request entry and residence in the US.

The important thing is to be patient and understand that global priorities can continually change. The best solution and the best advice is to have the right guidance regarding immigration.
