Press Secretary Discusses COVID-19 Among Migrants Crossing the Borders

Jen Psaki responds about Coronavirus among migrants crossing the borders

Coronavirus among immigrant communities

After more than a year, the world is still going through one of the most alarming health crises in recent human history. The global Coronavirus pandemic spread rapidly and uncontrollably around the world and, since it is a highly contagious virus through human contact, figures increased disproportionately in a matter of weeks.

Over the past year, we have had to relearn how to relate to our environment, and governments had to implement unconventional emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, protect local populations, and safeguard essential resources.

In the US, as in most countries, the massive outbreak of Coronavirus affected some communities more than others since there are sectors of the market that could not pause their services such as the food supply chain (agriculture, food packaging industry, food transportation, food supply, inter alia).

For instance, immigrant communities have been tremendously affected by the global Coronavirus pandemic in the US.

Let’s look at some important facts:

  • Thousands of immigrants work in important sectors such as the US food supply chain and the healthcare system. Therefore, many of them were exposed to the virus during the massive outbreak.
  • In October 2020, the CIS (Center for Immigration Studies) released a report that reveals that 14.3% of immigrant workers live in overcrowded conditions, which represents almost half of local workers living in crowded houses.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), social distancing is the best alternative to reduce contagion figures. Thus, living in overcrowded areas undoubtedly increased health risk among immigrant communities.
  • Thousands of immigrants avoided seeking medical assistance amid the health crisis for fear of deportation and restrictive policies of former President Trump.
  • The Coronavirus outbreak within ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) Immigrant Detention Centers was truly alarming, affecting vulnerable immigrant communities.

Jen Psaki responds about Coronavirus among migrants crossing the borders

Jen Psaki, the Biden administration’s press secretary, recently commented on Coronavirus cases among migrants crossing the US borders and how the situation is being handled to prevent another massive outbreak in the North American territory.

It is important to clarify that, since January 25, 2021, 108 active cases of Coronavirus have been reported among migrants crossing the country’s borders. Regarding this issue, the press secretary responded that the Biden administration is returning most immigrants who arrive at the borders on grounds of health emergency, and those who are allowed to enter the country under specific scenarios must agree to the COVID-19 test. Adding to that, if any of them have Coronavirus-related symptoms, they must also be in preventive isolation for a period of time.

Avoid precarious situations, migrate safely!
