Possible Release of Immigrants Held at the Borders

Coronavirus alert in US immigration centers Lawsuit

Lawsuit against immigration centers

According to health experts, one of the best solutions to avoid the massive spread of the COVID-19 virus is to have a distance of at least 1 or 2 meters between people.

Border establishments are overcrowded with immigrants, which does not allow them to have enough space between each other.

Immigration rights advocates sued President Trump’s immigration policies on Saturday, March 21, 2020. The lawsuit is directed to the immigration detention centers in New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

The lawsuit states that immigration detention centers are not safe for families held there.

There are more than 3 dozen families (including children) that are living in marginal conditions.

The main arguments of the lawsuit

  • According to the Centers for Disease Control, there should be no meetings of more than 10 people in the US to prevent the spread of Coronavirus. Advocates claim that immigrant centers are overcrowded and this can make them a hotbed of the virus.
  • The lawsuit literally states: “Detained mothers, fathers and children are forced to live and sleep in confined spaces and are required to congregate and, as a result, are unable to achieve ‘social distancing’ necessary to effectively prevent the spread of COVID-19 “.
  • They expose the lack of cleanliness needed at immigrant facilities at the borders. Cleaning is usually done by detainees in exchange of a minimum monetary reward for doing this labor.
  • There is no hand sanitizer or masks. Detainees do not have soaps and cannot bathe often.
  • The lawsuit also states: “It is almost certain to expect COVID-19 to infect and spread rapidly in family residential centers, especially when people cannot engage in proper hygiene or isolate themselves from infected or asymptomatic residents or staff.
  • They call for the release of immigrant families that do not expose any danger to society (which is the majority).
  • If families cannot be released from detention centers, they request an efficient disinfection method to prevent mass contagion at least.
  • The lawsuit states that if they do not act efficiently and immediately, the number of infections and deaths will be very damaging for the entire country, not just for immigrants.
  • Federal employees who operate in detention centers also allege policy changes as they are at high risk as well.

The response to the lawsuit

Trump’s administration has not responded yet, however, they have already received the lawsuit notification.

It is imperative that the government make an immediate decision regarding this issue. Everyone is working towards the goal of reducing the number of infected and stopping the possible deaths of the most vulnerable.

It is notable that the current government does not support immigration in general. However, it is time to unite as humanity and that is why the US must do the same to avoid almost unstoppable social chaos.
