NJ Hispanic Voters Consider Immigration for Elections

NJ Hispanic voters think immigration should have more relevance during presidential debates

Immigration as a main topic in the presidential elections

The next presidential elections of the US will take place in one week, in early November 2020. The two main candidates are former Vice President Joe Biden (Democratic political party) and current President Donald Trump (Republican political party), who is seeking the re-election.

Immigration has always been a controversial issue in the country, generating opposing opinions and positions among the American population, which currently has a high percentage of immigrants who have become citizens or have had children in the country. Hence, immigration is undoubtedly an issue that is always present in local presidential campaigns.

However, due to the unprecedented health crisis brought by the global Coronavirus pandemic, nominees have commented on the immigration sector only briefly during this year’s presidential debates.

Although the main issues are the health system, hygiene and safety protocols proposed by the government and the COVID-19, it is important for the local population to pay attention to immigration policies, mainly because the Trump administration has substantially transformed and modified the US immigration system and implications of current restrictions should be carefully considered by American citizens, as they could change the country’s future for generations to come.

For instance, an immigrant resident of NJ states: “I have family and friends who have not been able to regularize their legal documents. This administration has made it harder for all of them. That is why I vote thinking of those who cannot vote, who do not have this right.”

Adding to that, it is important to clarify that according to the Pew Research Center, there are approximately 32 million Latino immigrants in the US who have the possibility to vote in upcoming elections, which represents 13.3% of local voters.
