Mexico Increases Efforts to Curb Irregular Immigration to the US

Mexico intervenes in the US border situation

The situation on the US borders is currently national news and is drawing the attention of the American population, unleashing a gigantic social controversy. This is because, in recent weeks, border forces such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) have reported a substantial increase in the number of immigrants trying to enter the country without legal documentation.

The situation is quite alarming because, on the one hand, a large part of immigrants apprehended at the borders are unaccompanied minors and, on the other hand, the Biden administration is trying to restructure the entire immigration system while there is a surge of illegal border crossings, which has drawn the attention of opposition groups.

It is important to clarify that the Biden administration, unlike the Trump administration, is not deporting unaccompanied immigrant minors amid the health crisis, but is using HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) centers to resettle them.

Massive irregular immigration is also affecting the Mexican territory, thus, the local government decided to intervene and is carrying out raids and operations to detain and return migrants from other Central American countries. In fact, as of February 16, 2021, Mexican authorities had detained approximately 1,200 undocumented immigrants, who were planning to reach the US borders.

Adding to that, Mexican authorities are increasing efforts to curb illegal immigration to the US and help the Biden administration to control the situation at the borders.

The Biden administration plans to help Mexico in its battle against COVID-19

For its part, the Biden administration plans to send COVID-19 vaccines to Mexico, at the same time that Mexico implements measures and strategies to curb illegal immigration to North America, according to a recent report by The Washington Post.

This cooperation plan aims to strengthen connections between the US and Mexico and the regional responsibility to reduce irregular immigration and improve conditions in the Central American territory.

It is important to clarify that support from Mexico is essential for the Biden administration to carry out its immigration plan, which aims to promote the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades (35 years).
