DHS Secretary Travels to the US Southern Border

Alejandro Mayorkas visits the US borders

The DHS (Department of Homeland Security) Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, traveled to the US-Mexico border on Friday, March 19, 2021, to witness what is really happening at the borders due to a substantial increase in illegal crossings, mainly of immigrants who plan to apply for political asylum and unaccompanied minors, which is saturating the resettlement system for children in the custody of HHS (Department of Health and Human Services).

Mayorkas, along with a group of bipartisan lawmakers, traveled to El Paso, Texas, where they visited several facilities for immigrant families, unaccompanied minors, and an authorized port of entry that is processing asylum cases allowed during the health crisis, those related to the project to dismantle the MPP (Migrant Protection Protocols) or “Remain in Mexico”.

It is important to clarify that most immigrants apprehended at the borders are being returned almost immediately because the health risk caused by the Coronavirus pandemic is still present. Therefore, the current controversy is mainly related to unaccompanied immigrant minors since the Biden administration, unlike the previous administration, is not deporting them amid the health crisis.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, who traveled with Mayorkas to the country’s southern borders, states that “The desperation these kids and families are fleeing is hard to describe (…) So long as conditions are abysmal in places south, people will find a way to get here, no matter how high the wall is or how many border agents.”

The situation at the borders could delay Biden’s immigration plan

The Biden administration is trying to control the situation at the borders with all the tools at its disposal in order to carry out its plan and promote comprehensive immigration overhaul. His administration faces an unprecedented challenge due to the surge of illegal border crossings, which could jeopardize his immigration proposal and reduce possibilities to restructure the entire immigration system.

This is mainly due to the fact that several opposition groups state that Biden’s immigration policies are causing a “border crisis” and, therefore, a part of the American population is also questioning his immigration plan.

However, one of the reasons why the current situation is quite alarming is because the Biden administration is not returning unaccompanied minors despite the health risk, something that was routine under the Trump administration.

Thus, it is quite possible that the number of immigrant minors crossing the US borders unaccompanied is the same that the Donald Trump administration would expel, possibly without notifying the public, as it happened on multiple occasions during the last four years (2017-2021).
