Judge Approves Visit of Specialists to Immigrant Detention Center

Judge sends 2 outside experts to check ICE's protocols

The massive outbreak of Coronavirus in detention centers

The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that the Coronavirus is a highly contagious global pandemic because it is easily transmitted through human contact and recommended social distancing as the main method of prevention.

Immigration detention centers have been a gigantic concern for hundreds of immigrant rights advocates and activists who argue that there is not enough space for social distancing and the people detained there are at immigrant risk.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is the entity in charge of supervising the detention centers that house undocumented immigrants while their deportation processes are completed.

The fact that ICE’s centers are overcrowded has sparked a massive Coronavirus outbreak. There are some detention centers where more than 80% of the people who reside there have tested positive for the COVID-19.

That is the case of a Virginia-based detention center, which has reported the highest number of people infected with Coronavirus among centers supervised by ICE.

In fact, the situation has been so alarming, that a team of experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently working at the Farmville center to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and protect the health of both detainees and employees infected with Coronavirus, as well as people who have not yet been infected.

Now, a judge has approved a request by several immigration attorneys to send outside experts to inspect this ICE detention center.

Judge gives green light for external experts to inspect detention center

Multiple attorneys representing immigrants detained in Farmville have filed a lawsuit, arguing that conditions in immigration detention centers are inappropriate and increase the risk of a massive outbreak of Coronavirus.

They asked the judge in charge of the case to allow them to send external specialists to inspect and evaluate in detail the hygiene and protection protocols implemented by ICE within its facilities.

The judge accepted the request and authorized two independent experts to enter the immigrant detention center in Farmville, Virginia.

Experts are allowed to enter ICE’s facilities during the week and must document the findings to report to the judge when the inspection is over.
