IRC Discusses About Humanitarian Crisis at the US Borders

IRC calls for immediate attention from the Biden government to immigration

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is an organization dedicated to protect human rights of the most vulnerable communities around the world, assisting during humanitarian crises and proposing alternatives to improve the quality of life of these communities.

Following the results of the US presidential elections, which took place on November 3, the IRC released a report called: “Safety for all: Responding to the humanitarian crisis in Central America, restoring the U.S. asylum system, and protecting the most vulnerable.”

Broadly speaking, this report mentions:

  • The humanitarian crisis on the borders of the US and Mexico.
  • The current circumstances of asylum seekers under the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico”.
  • Mass deportations.
  • Repercussions of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, which, in the opinion of the IRC, violate human rights, endanger the lives, well-being and integrity of the most vulnerable immigrant communities, and worsen a pre-existing humanitarian crisis.
  • Steps that the Biden administration will need to take during the first 100 days to improve the situation at the borders and protect the well-being of asylum seekers.
  • The rise of immigrants arriving at the borders of the US after the massive outbreak of Coronavirus.
  • Trump’s travel ban.

Trump’s immigration policies and the current humanitarian crisis

The reason why IRC decided to intervene after the presidential election, and create an action plan to protect the integrity of the most vulnerable immigrant communities, is because the Trump administration’s immigration policies have worsened the humanitarian crisis at the US borders, increasing the separation of immigrant families and forcing asylum seekers to remain in dangerous cities in Mexico.

With this, we refer to the MPP, an immigration policy implemented by the Trump administration, with the approval of the Mexican government, which states that asylum seekers must remain in Mexico until they receive a response to their immigration applications.

It is imperative to understand that asylum seekers flee danger, persecution, violence or abuse and, thus, arrive at the borders of the US without basic resources to survive, waiting for international protection through humanitarian programs.

However, this policy has worsened a pre-existing humanitarian crisis because asylum seekers currently live in temporary shelters, without access to basic services, food, medical assistance, bathrooms in adequate conditions or protection of any kind. Therefore, dozens of surrounding communities, humanitarian organizations and activists watch over their safety and well-being, making donations and offering them basic services to survive.

Adding to that, the health crisis brought by the global Coronavirus pandemic worsened the situation for asylum seekers at the borders and the Biden administration will need to act quickly to protect the most vulnerable immigrant communities, without affecting the well-being of the American population, and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.
