Improving the Immigration System Would also Reduce Federal Expenditures

Improving the legal immigration system might be the solution to many problems

The Biden administration tries to improve the border situation

The surge of illegal border crossings, which has increased mainly since February 2021, is putting the Biden administration’s immigration plans at risk. Biden proposes to reform the entire immigration system to implement policies that are more just, humane and in line with current needs in order to attract talent from abroad and boost the economy in times of crisis.

It is worth mentioning that the previous administration, led by former President Donald Trump, increased operations to detain undocumented immigrants within the US, built a large part of the border wall to curb irregular migration, increased surveillance at the borders and expedited deportation processes.

Therefore, under Trump’s term, deportations were carried out faster than normal and the health emergency caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic allowed his administration to adopt an emergency measure called “express deportations”, which disproportionately increased the number of deportations from border territory.

It is important to clarify that the reason why Biden is facing a gigantic challenge is because he is trying to address mass irregular migration from a new perspective. His administration plans to give the most vulnerable immigrant communities the opportunity to enter the US and, primarily, protect immigrant minors who arrive at the borders unaccompanied. Unlike the Trump administration, President Biden and his team disagree with expelling children amid an unprecedented global health crisis.

Federal expenses to house immigrant minors

The Biden administration states that Trump left almost no recourses to assist unaccompanied minors. Therefore, Biden has had to carry out different strategies to welcome and house the growing number of children who have come to the US in recent months, which is a truly high figure.

In fact, according to a recent report by The Washington Post, the Biden administration has had to invest around $60 million per week to be able to house unaccompanied immigrant minors in HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) facilities, even if some of them are temporary.

Adding to that, in the fiscal year 2022 (October-September) budget proposal, the Biden administration calls for a $2 billion increase for HHS funding, explaining that this budget would be used especially for the Unaccompanied Children Program.

Improving the legal immigration system might be the solution to many problems

It is clear that the Biden administration is trying to handle the border situation and reduce mass irregular migration without violating the human rights of unaccompanied immigrant minors. Nevertheless, are there perhaps other tools to address the situation without investing a large amount in federal entities? The answer is yes.

According to the opinion of dozens of experts, critics and researchers, one of the main reasons why foreigners decide to start the dangerous journey of coming to the US without legal documentation is precisely because the local immigration system can be quite complex and difficult.

Thus, the Biden administration still has the potential to streamline certain immigration processes, reduce the backlog of pending immigration applications, and improve the legal immigration system in general as an efficient strategy to reduce irregular immigration levels.
