Impact of Immigration Policies on the Trump Campaign

Immigration policies might interviene in the presidential elections

The global pandemic increases immigration restrictions

Since the massive Coronavirus outbreak reached the US, the Trump administration has implemented multiple emergency measures and restrictions on the country’s immigration sector.

With the presidential election getting closer and closer, the stance of the strongest candidates on immigration plays a major role in the presidential campaigns and could intervene in the decision of the American population.

For now, the two strongest candidates are:

  1. The current president of the US, Donald Trump, belonging to the Republican political party.
  2. The former vice president (during Barack Obama’s term), Joe Biden, belonging to the Democratic political party.

The views of these two nominees regarding immigration are diametrically opposed.

  1. Trump’s ideals are more related to reducing immigration at all costs, including legal immigration.
  2. Biden’s position proposes to expand certain benefits and processes for immigrants and thus reduce illegal immigration that greatly affects the US.

Thus, some of President Trump’s policies have been abruptly and suddenly implemented in recent months, sparking a seemingly endless cycle of controversy.

Poll shows the impact of current immigration policies

A recent poll conducted by the Democratic pollster Global Strategy Group shows the repercussions of current immigration policies on the presidential elections that will take place in November 2020.

The survey results were released on Thursday, July 23, 2020, and are focused on the immigration views of the two strongest candidates of the US.

Broadly speaking, the poll showed that the Trump administration’s tight stance on immigration during the global pandemic is reducing the number of citizens supporting its campaign.

Approximately 1,504 people answered the survey and it took place between May 27 and June 3, 2020.

It is important to clarify that some of the emergency measures that affect the immigration sector were implemented by the Trump government after this date, therefore, the results would surely be different now.

Let’s see some of the most important and conclusive results:

  • 57% of voters are not comfortable with Trump’s immigration policies, while 43% do not agree with Biden’s immigration proposals.
  • Support for Trump’s presidential campaign got 44%, while support for Biden’s presidential campaign won with 51%.
  • Of all the voters, 61% stated that they know Biden’s immigration policies, while 91% stated that they know President Trump’s immigration proposals very well.

With these results, we can see how immigration policies will intervene in the 2020 presidential elections. Mainly due to the fact that the two strongest nominees have very different opinions about it.

Citizens must carefully weigh the options

This is a watershed moment for the US. It is essential for the local population to carefully analyze the two presidential campaigns.

In addition to the elections, it is important to remember that we are going through a health, social, economic and political crisis. Thus, social discernment is the primary key for the future of the US.
