Immigration Reform Proposal Brings Hope for Vulnerable Communities

Immigrants hope Biden's plans will lead to citizenship

Biden’s bid to improve the local immigration system

The US immigration system is quite broad, offers multiple viable alternatives for foreigners, and tends to change slightly or considerably depending on the ideals, proposals and goals of the country’s administrations.

For instance, the current administration of the US, headed by President Joe Biden, has a fairly ambitious stance on immigration and plans to promote the first comprehensive reform in decades to, among many other things, increase alternatives available to foreign workers, improve existing options for vulnerable immigrant communities such as asylum seekers, and provide a path to citizenship for eligible undocumented immigrants.

The Biden administration recently introduced the “US Citizenship Act of 2021,” which is the most ambitious immigration bill since the 80s. This proposal is currently under review by Congress, which will decide its viability and validity. Adding to that, the Biden government decided, very assertively, to break the immigration bill into pieces so that Congress can review each of the proposals and, even if some of them are rejected, there will also be a portion that will be approved, which will lead to substantial progress on the immigration system.

Within the immigration bill, Biden and his team propose not only to offer a path to citizenship for undocumented foreigners, but also to improve surveillance and protection at the borders through technology, reduce mass immigration by helping and supporting the Central American territory and offer permanent solutions for DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients and TPS (Temporary Protected Status) beneficiaries.

Immigrants hope Biden’s plans will lead to citizenship

Under Biden’s legislation, some immigrants would have the ability to apply for lawful permanent residence (Green Card) immediately after approval, and they could apply for American citizenship after three years. This includes:

  • Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors. Currently, Dreamers can apply for DACA, but this is only a temporary relief program. Therefore, the Biden administration wants to offer them permanent immigration status since they are an essential part of the local workforce.
  • TPS beneficiaries, who also have temporary protection against deportation and come from countries experiencing ongoing armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and other precarious situations. It is worth mentioning that the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) is the entity in charge of choosing TPS beneficiary countries.
  • Foreign farmers, who work tirelessly, even in the midst of the health crisis, to bring food to American families and, in many cases, are undocumented and do not have access to social benefits.

In order to apply for Green Cards under these scenarios, immigrants must meet certain mandatory requirements and eligibility parameters.

According to the testimony of dozens of immigrants, the Biden administration opened a door of hope for them through its immigration bill. They hope that Congress will pass the proposal so that they can have a path to citizenship and be able to build a promising future in the US.

It is important to mention that many of them have resided in the US for years, even decades, and state that the mere idea of having legal documentation has always been a dream for them.
