ICE Starts Campaign in Pennsylvania to Target Undocumented Immigrants

ICE will start billboard campaign to detain undocumented foreigners in Pennsylvania

Alliances between ICE and law enforcement entities

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency carries out operations around the US with the purpose of detaining immigrants who managed to cross the borders without legal documentation.

ICE’s growth has been exponential during Donald Trump’s presidency. In fact, 10,000 ICE employees have been hired in recent years, increasing surveillance at the borders and accelerating deportation proceedings for undocumented immigrants.

Normally, ICE tries to create agreements with local law enforcement entities. With this, we mean that the federal entity tries to obtain cooperation from prisons and correctional to be able to detain undocumented immigrants within these facilities, instead of carrying out operations within the communities, which could represent a risk for the American population.

The so-called “sanctuary laws”

Each state has the right to decide to cooperate with border entities like ICE or not. Thus, there are cities that choose to implement “sanctuary laws”, which prevent local prisons and correctional facilities from cooperating with ICE.

Therefore, the federal entity does not have the power to detain undocumented immigrants within these facilities, nor to obtain their personal information. The only way to carry out this operation is if ICE presents an arrest warrant after verifying that an undocumented immigrant is located in a prison or correctional facility.

In early October, ICE declared that it would begin operations in sanctuary cities. This caught the attention of activists as the presidential elections approach and they claim that it is just another plan of the Trump administration to instill fear among immigrant communities.

ICE launches advertising campaign in Pennsylvania

On Friday, October 2, 2020, ICE announced that it would start a billboard campaign in Pennsylvania, with the intention of pointing out undocumented immigrants, who have been involved in crimes, called “at-large immigration violators.”

ICE states that they may pose a threat to the American population and were released from prisons or local correctional facilities under “sanctuary laws”. ICE argues that these laws “fail to honor immigration detainers” by protecting undocumented foreigners, who could threaten the citizens’ integrity.

How will ICE’s advertising campaign work?

ICE plans to create billboards with the names and faces of immigrants, exposing details of their legal charges and the entity that released them.

Since this campaign has been classified as “arbitrary and invasive”, it naturally caught the attention of hundreds of immigrant rights advocates, who ask the government to avoid this advertising campaign as it could unleash a wave of violence and social division between immigrant communities and conservative citizens.
