ICE increases immigraton detention for lack of documentation

Immigrants arrested for being undocumented

The number of immigrants detained, with no criminal record, by US immigration authorities has tripled in the last four years according to the last report from “Freedom for Immigrants”.

In April 2019, there were 32,000 immigrants detained who had no criminal record, three times more than 9,999 foreigners without a criminal record, who were arrested in March 20015. These figures were shown in a study conducted by Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) of the University of Syracuse.

The study indicates that in April 2019, immigrants detained without criminal record by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), reached 64% of the total number of foreigners detained, although the increase was registered under the administration of President Barack Obama.

Until November 30, 2018, there were 46,279 immigrants detained by ICE and 28,357 had no criminal record, equivalent to 61%.

Detention centers with more immigrants without a criminal record

According to the report, there are 878 immigrants held at the South Texas Fam Residential Center, but only eight have a criminal record. In El Paso Holdroom, six of the 331 immigrants arrested have a criminal record.

President Donald Trump said on Twitter that undocumented youth protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, “are not angels” and “some can be criminals,” arguing that undocumented immigrants are criminals and negatively affect the country.
