Google to Support 500 DACA Recipients

Google to fund employment applications for DACA recipients

On Wednesday, January 13, 2020, Google, an Alphabet Inc’s subsidiary company, which is one of the most important technology platforms among search engines in the world, stated that it will fund approximately 500 employment applications of DACA recipients (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

DACA is a program that protects undocumented immigrants, who came to the US as children, from deportation. Today, most DACA recipients are an essential part of the local workforce and belong to important sectors of the market.

This immigration benefit was implemented by the Obama administration in 2012, who offered help to young immigrants, commonly known as “Dreamers”, arguing that they are essential workers, many of them do not even remember their countries and their integrity could be at risk if they face deportation proceedings and return to hostile environments.

DACA offers protection from deportation for two years, with the possibility of extension. Adding to that, DACA recipients can apply for employment authorization and study permits, as long as they meet mandatory requirements.

The fact that Google supports DACA recipients is truly positive news for immigrant communities in the US, who have felt constant fear and anguish under the Trump administration.

Why did Google decide to help DACA recipients?

Google, along with many other companies, have criticized the Trump administration for the past four years for restricting immigration, primarily employment-based visa programs. Google argues that Trump’s policies substantially delayed the socio-economic development of local businesses, which heavily rely on foreign workforce, from farmers and inexperienced workers to highly skilled foreign workers in fields such as technology, science, engineering and research.

Indeed, the Trump administration used all the tools at its disposal to reduce the number of immigrants entering the US and implemented policies that sparked a gigantic wave of controversy among the American population, immigrant rights advocates, the most vulnerable immigrant communities and local companies.

However, luckily for immigration-supporting companies like Google, local citizens elected Democratic nominee Joe Biden as the 46th president of the US, who will take office on January 20, 2021.

Biden is quite welcoming when it comes to immigration and plans to restructure and reform the entire immigration system to lift Trump’s restrictions and boost the economy in times of crisis. Google supports Biden’s plans regarding immigration and states that it is necessary for the international competitiveness of the US.

In fact, Google’s Senior Vice President stated: “We will support efforts by the new Congress and incoming Administration to pass comprehensive immigration reform that improves employment-based visa programs that enhance American competitiveness, gives greater assurance to immigrant workers and employers, and promotes better and more humane immigration processing and border security practices.”

Dreamers welcome this news with great hope after being on the tight rope for four years as the Trump administration tried to remove DACA from programs offered to immigrants in the US.
