FAIR Discusses Biden’s Immigration Proposal

FAIR releases study regarding Biden's immigration reform

Opinions of the two strongest candidates on immigration

The presidential elections of the US will take place in November 2020, and the two strongest candidates are driving their political campaigns around the country.

One of the most important aspects of these elections is immigration. This is mainly because the nominees have an almost diametrically opposite stance on immigration policies.

Donald trump

On the one hand, current President Donald Trump, who belongs to the Republican political party and is seeking reelection, has a fairly strict stance when it comes to immigration, especially illegal immigration. In fact, in recent years, the Trump administration has implemented more than 400 changes in the immigration sector, creating a new record in the country’s recent history.

President Trump argues that mass immigration, both legal and illegal, affects the American population and becomes an unnecessary burden on the country’s economic system. On top of that, unlike its predecessor Barack Obama, the Trump administration has substantially decreased chances for undocumented immigrants to obtain legal residency.

Joe biden

On the other hand, former Vice President Joe Biden, who belongs to the Democratic political party, has a more welcoming stance when it comes to immigration. The Democratic nominee plans to increase benefits and options for immigrants to enter the US legally and, therefore, decrease illegal immigration.

Biden argues that immigrants tend to cross borders without legal documentation due to strict policies of the Trump administration, which has isolated the US and denied thousands of immigrants the possibility of seeking international protection through programs such as political asylum or refuge.

FAIR conducts an analysis of Biden’s proposals regarding immigration

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is a nonpartisan organization that evaluates, analyzes and proposes immigration policies, presenting specific facts and figures about the impact of immigration on the American population, the behavior of local market and the socio-economic development of the country.

FAIR recently conducted a study named How the Biden/Harris Immigration Platform Will Fuel a Staggering Increase of Immigrants and Population Growth“, which looks at the Democratic nominee’s immigration proposals and their potential repercussions.

Some of Biden’s proposals analyzed by FAIR are:

  • Restoration of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), an immigration program that has been on the tight rope during the term of President Trump.
  • Citizenship options for 11 million undocumented immigrants, although FAIR clarifies that the real figure is approximately 14.3 million.
  • New visa categories and legal immigration alternatives.
  • Changes in border security protocols.

The results of the analysis indicate that if Biden succeeds in keeping his immigration promises:

  • He would have to raise taxes for the American population in order to offer citizenship to millions of undocumented immigrants.
  • The population density could increase substantially, mainly because more than 50 million immigrants would be welcomed in the US during his term.

What do immigrant rights advocates think?

Dozens of activists and immigrant rights advocates argue that these figures do not match immigration proposals of the Democratic nominee, Joe Biden.

They claim that his proposals, seen from a humanitarian perspective, could counteract the impact of the Trump administration’s policies, which separate families at the borders, return asylum seekers to dangerous cities in Mexico, promote raids to constantly detain undocumented immigrants, violate international human rights and contradict the Constitution of the US.

What will be the best choice for the US?

It is imperative to take the time to thoroughly analyze immigration proposals of the two strongest presidential candidates, mainly because the next leader of the nation will have to deal with the health crisis and the gigantic controversy surrounding the immigration sector.
