Diversity Visa Lottery Winners File Lawsuit Against Trump’s Administration

Winners of the diversity visa lottery filed a lawsuit against Trump's administration

This time, the complaint is about the Diversity Visa Lottery

The US is a country internationally known for its famous Diversity Visa Lottery. Annually, since 1990, the US Department of State (DOS) issues approximately 50,000 random visas that grant legal permanent residence, also known as Green Card, to immigrants from different countries.

In order for immigrants to apply for the visa lottery, they must be from one of the eligible countries, generally characterized for having a low percentage of immigration to the US.

Since President Trump took office in 2017, he has openly stated his complete disagreement with the Diversity Visa Lottery.

In fact, one of his first actions as president of the US was to request Congress to cancel the famous lottery, arguing that “it is not good, we have been against it, so we want to immediately work with Congress on the diversity lottery program, on terminating it, getting rid of it”.

The arrival of the pandemic helped the Trump government

In light of the public health threat posed by the global pandemic, the current administration of the US has implemented multiple emergency measures to counter and mitigate the impact of the Coronavirus.

Several of these measures are directed at the immigration sector. For instance, Green Card applications submitted from abroad will not be available until the end of the year.

In this way, the government refrains from receiving immigrants during the health crisis and thus can safeguard and protect local resources. In the opinion of the Trump administration, this measure will also help protect available employment opportunities and local workers.

Visa Lottery winners file a lawsuit

Nearly 500 immigrants with different nationalities filed a lawsuit against the Trump government for banning them from entering the US after obtaining legal residency through the Diversity Visa Lottery.

They assure that the lottery is a legal program offered to immigrants and therefore must be respected by any administration of the country.

In addition to that, it is important to understand that many immigrants who win the lottery decide to sell their belongings in order to pay for the trip and many of them are currently having a difficult time due to the pandemic and the restriction implemented by the Trump government.

On the other hand, the lawsuit mentions that immigrants would bring great benefits to the country and help boost the economy to overcome the current economic crisis.

In fact, a Cuban citizen who won the lottery at the end of 2019 stated: “We are university students, youth and workers. We want to bring the best of us to the United States and make that country our home”.
