DHS Acting Secretary Commends ICE Raids in Sanctuary Cities

Chad Wolf praises ICE for operations in California sanctuary cities

The power of border forces

Illegal immigration has been a primary focus of President Trump since he took office in 2017. Thus, undocumented immigrants, especially those with a history of crime, are the target of the current administration of the US.

In fact, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency is a key player for the Trump government. For instance, one of its tasks is to conduct exhaustive investigations to locate undocumented immigrants who violated local law and who, in the opinion of the current administration, pose a threat to the American population.

ICE has grown exponentially during the term of President Trump, who approved the hiring of 10,000 employees to protect borders and carry out operations within the US. As a result, ICE raids have become more frequent in recent years.

ICE raids in sanctuary cities

Recently, ICE announced that it would begin operations in Sanctuary Cities, with the purpose of detaining undocumented immigrants who participated in crimes and initiating deportation proceedings for them.

Broadly speaking, sanctuary cities choose to implement local laws that ban cooperation with border forces like ICE. Therefore, local prisons and correctional facilities are not allowed to share inmates’ personal information, nor can they allow ICE to enter their facilities to detain undocumented immigrants, unless it has an official arrest warrant.

From September 28 to October 1, 2020, ICE operations in sanctuary cities have led to the arrest of 128 undocumented immigrants in California.

Groups of activists and immigrant rights advocates raised their voices against ICE’s raids on California sanctuary cities. In fact, spokespersons for Governor Newsom (California) have made public their disagreement with ICE operations within immigrant communities.

DHS acting secretary comments on ICE operations in Sanctuary Cities

Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Chad Wolf, praised the results of ICE operations in California sanctuary cities over the past week.

Wolf openly expressed his satisfaction with ICE, stating that “Residents should understand and continue to expect a more visible ICE presence in California while this non-cooperation Sanctuary City policy remains in effect.”

Adding to that, Wolf declares that ICE will continue with its tasks despite the fact that there are cities that do not cooperate with federal entities. He clarified that these operations aim to detain undocumented immigrants who pose a threat to American citizens. Thus, the targets are typically people who had a “criminal conviction, a pending criminal charge, had criminally re-entered the U.S. after being previously removed, or were an immigration fugitive subject to a final order of removal.
