Biden plans to create a regional framework to handle immigration

On Tuesday, February 2, 2021, President Biden issued an executive order to create a regional framework to handle immigration in the Central and North American territory. The current president of the US states that it is essential to improve the infrastructure of the immigration sector at regional level in order to establish international cooperation networks and reduce irregular immigration.

Within the action plan, President Biden proposes:

1. To improve the quality of life for Central American citizens

For the Biden administration, it is imperative to address mass immigration from its root causes and understand why thousands of people decide to leave their countries, seeking better opportunities or international protection.

The current administration of the US plans to help Central American countries to improve the quality of life for their inhabitants. Biden declares that local governments must offer them benefits and social services so that they do not have to migrate in times of crisis, but instead find support and alternatives where they live.

President Biden states that, in order to improve the current situation at the US borders, it is important to address the underlying factors that force people from other nations to migrate, that is, to address “violence, instability, and lack of opportunity.”

2. To improve the infrastructure of the asylum system in both Central and North America

In the executive order, President Biden emphasizes the need to restructure the political asylum system, not only in the US, but in neighboring countries to avoid mass immigration to North America and also for the Central American territory to have the possibility to offer international assistance to the most vulnerable immigrant communities, such as asylum seekers.

To achieve this goal, the Biden administration proposes to “build, strengthen, and expand Central and North American countries’ asylum systems and resettlement capacity; and increase opportunities for vulnerable populations to apply for protection closer to home.”

The current president of the US declares that the asylum system suffered considerable damage during the last four years due to restrictive policies implemented by the Trump administration, which affected vulnerable populations.

3. To create a regional cooperation network to curb irregular immigration

Reducing and handling illegal immigration has always been an essential task for the US’ administrations. However, the Biden administration ensures that the proper way to tackle irregular immigration is by finding the root causes and improving the immigration infrastructure in Central America to prevent thousands of undocumented immigrants from reaching the US borders.

To achieve this goal, the president directed his team to create a strategy and an action plan to establish a regional and local collaboration program and address irregular immigration at the root.

In this way, the Biden administration plans to reform and restructure, as far as possible, the immigration system, both in the US and in neighboring countries that are also constantly facing the repercussions of illegal immigration.
