Biden Will Have to Face Wave of Immigrants at the Borders

Massive arrival of immigrants at the US’ borders

The most recent presidential election of the US took place on November 3, 2020. The two strongest candidates were current President Donald Trump (Republican) and former Vice President Joe Biden (Democrat). The American population elected the Democratic nominee as the nation’s 46th president, who will take office in January 2021.

The Biden government will have to face multiple challenges, not only because of the aftermath of Trump’s policies, but also because the US is still the main epicenter of the global pandemic and the health crisis affected several sectors of society as we know it. On the one hand, the president-elect must pay attention to problems related to the health system, the economy, the unemployment rate and climate change. On the other hand, his government must also take into account sectors such as immigration; with this, we refer to current immigration policies, visa programs, restrictions implemented by Trump and human rights of the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

Adding to that, the Biden government will have to face the arrival of thousands of immigrants, mainly from Central America, to the borders of the US.

This is mainly because:

  • The Biden administration has a more welcoming stance on immigration. Thus, immigrant communities plan to come to the US during his term to seek international protection through humanitarian programs.
  • Several natural disasters have affected the Central American territory. Therefore, thousands of people are forced to migrate to seek job opportunities and economic stability, and the best destination is undoubtedly the US.
  • The health crisis caused by the global Coronavirus pandemic tremendously affected the Central American territory, mainly because the health system is not strong enough to withstand the impact of the pandemic and the global crisis also affected the economy of these countries, leaving thousands of unemployed people with no government or social benefits to survive.

However, the Biden administration and neighboring countries are trying to reduce the number of immigrants that could reach the US borders during the next six months.

Let’s see some strategies:

  • The Biden administration plans to invest $4 billion to improve the quality of life in Central America and address massive illegal immigration from another perspective. The president-elect states that Central American citizens need more local benefits and opportunities, so that they do not have to leave their territories due to lack of resources.
  • Central American authorities are trying to stop migrant caravans heading to the US. Hundreds of people are trying to cross borders unlawfully in order to request international protection (through political asylum, refuge, or other humanitarian programs) in the US. However, law enforcement entities in Central America are dispersing these caravans to avoid a humanitarian crisis at the borders.
  • To reduce illegal immigration, the Biden administration plans to increase legal alternatives for immigrants, who will have the opportunity to build a promising future in the US without violating local law or constantly fearing deportation.
