Biden Proposes Doubling Staff to Process Asylum Seekers

Biden plans to double staff to process political asylum cases

Biden’s new plan to improve the asylum system

President Joe Biden arrived at the White House with the firm intention of promoting the first comprehensive immigration reform in decades, gaining bipartisan support in Congress. Along the way, however, the Biden administration has encountered a number of obstacles that have interfered with its immigration plans, such as the surge of illegal border crossings that has increased since the beginning of the year and pressure from certain Republican leaders and opposition groups.

As a result, the Biden administration has had to rearrange and reshape its plans related to the immigration system, taking into account the current situation and the constraints it is facing in Congress. As a result, President Biden and his team have introduced several immigration projects and proposals over the past few months that aim to improve the immigration system in pieces.

To give a specific example, on Wednesday, August 18, the Biden administration unveiled a new plan that seeks to optimize and expedite political asylum case processing in the border territory. With this, Biden hopes to reduce the alarming backlog of applications in immigration courts and improve the border situation in the shortest possible time.

Biden plans to double staff to process political asylum cases

As part of its plan, the Biden administration proposes to allow the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) employees to process most political asylum cases at the borders, rather than sending them to an immigration court, which can take several months or even more than a year.

Therefore, through this strategy, the Biden administration could almost immediately determine the eligibility of asylum seekers who arrive at the US’ borders looking for international protection. If immigrants meet the mandatory requirements for political asylum status, they could enter the US; if not, they would be returned through express removal or deportation, which would allow the current administration to avoid unnecessary backlogs of immigration cases.

On top of that, according to a DHS (Department of Homeland Security) official, the Biden administration plans to hire 1,000 immigration officers to optimize asylum application processing at the borders and 1,000 support staff, which will allow it to expedite these cases and control the border situation efficiently and effectively.
