Work Permits for Asylum Seekers may be Denied

Trump wants to restrict work permits for asylum seekers

Reforms to immigration laws proposed by Trump

The current administration of the US has the goal of reducing illegal immigration at all costs. Now that the elections are near, President Trump is creating a new reform to immigration laws to present as the main pillar of his campaign.

Over the past few years, the government has proposed several action plans to reduce the number of immigrants who cross borders illegally.

Also, there are several agreements with neighboring countries such as Mexico and Guatemala to avoid mass migration from Central America.

President Trump wants to deny work permits to asylum seekers

Within the plans of the current administration of the US, President Trump publicly announced in November 2019 that he proposes to deny work permits issued by the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) to asylum seekers who do not meet certain requirements.

The Trump administration argues that:

  • If an immigrant crosses borders illegally and applies for asylum already living in the country without legal documentation, any application for a work permit should be denied.
  • When immigrants cross the US’ borders without legal documentation, they are incurring the “zero tolerance immigration policy” and should not be eligible to apply for legal residency or citizenship (this includes undocumented immigrants who pay annual taxes).

This change in immigration policy was announced last year, however, it has not yet been officially implemented.

The Trump administration mentioned again last week its intention to deny work permits to asylum seekers who have crossed borders illegally.

In addition to that, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that asylum hearings will be postponed again until July 20, 2020 due to the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus.

The hope of asylum seekers

It is a difficult time for immigrants who want to apply for asylum or refuge in the United States.

The global pandemic has brought many changes in immigration policies and the current government is taking the opportunity to increase restrictions.

However, it is important to understand that there are a wide variety of ways to apply for legal residence in the US. Perhaps the only thing missing is the specialized guide of expert immigration attorneys.

It is imperative to avoid illegal immigration at all costs, that decision never brings positive repercussions and it could affect the future generations as well as could generate a deportation case, which is not ideal during these times of crisis.
