The government won’t provide guarantees to reuse expired Green Cards

Among the proposals made at the beginning of the Biden administration was the possibility of reusing expired Green Card. Despite this initiative, the White House recently stated that this proposal currently has no clear path for implementation.

It is worth clarifying that Green Cards grant lawful permanent residency and, in most cases, are the last step before the citizenship process.

One of the provisions within the Build Back Better

This proposal to reuse unissued Green Cards was one of the provisions included in the Build Back Better bill, which seeks to introduce certain reforms to immigration in the budget package.

This spending bill has had several modifications, including budget cuts, in order to suit the political intentions of senators who so far have not validated the provisions.

However, even with a trimmed version of the original bill, the Senate Parliamentarian’s filter considered that it did not meet the requirements to be approved.

For this reason, this proposal, along with other immigration goals, remains in legislative limbo.
