What Would Happen to Immigration if Biden Wins the Presidential Election?

Biden plans to reform immigration laws

Former Democratic Vice President

Joe Biden was the vice president during Barack Obama’s term (2009-2017) and belongs to the Democratic political party.

Today, Biden is one of the strongest candidates for the presidential elections that will take place in November, 2020.

The Democratic nominee has a considerable advantage over Donald Trump (belonging to the Republican political party), according to the latest national polls.

Biden’s view on immigration

It is well known that Trump’s government disagrees with immigration and has implemented multiple restrictions on immigration policies.

In fact, immigration has been greatly reduced during the global Coronavirus pandemic due to limitations imposed by the current administration of the US.

On the other hand, unlike Trump’s government, Democratic candidate Joe Biden has very different ideas regarding immigration and wants to implement several action plans to restore and strengthen some of the programs proposed by the Barack Obama administration.

In one of the interviews conducted in recent months, Biden stated: “Immigrants built this country. That’s why we’re so special. It took courage. It took resilience. It took, absolutely, confidence for them to come. And we should be encouraging these people”.

In addition to that, on the official website of the Democratic candidate, Biden mentions that the current immigration system is broken and urgently needs a restructuring to prevent more immigrant families from suffering the consequences of the “coldness” of the current government.

Biden says that improving the immigration processes of the US will bring balance and benefits for the local population, as well as for the economic and political system.

Biden’s plans regarding immigration

Some of the important aspects of Biden’s presidential campaign regarding immigration are:

1. The restructuring of asylum processes

The Democratic candidate assures that the current asylum processes do not obey the country’s law and violate human rights since immigrant families are separated and they must remain in Immigration Detention Centers for a fairly long time.

Thus, Biden wants to restructure asylum processes to fulfill the mission of protecting victims of violence and immigrants who need it the most.

In addition to that, Biden plans to invest approximately $ 4 million in Central America. With this monetary aid, he intends to help the Central American territory to reduce mass migration.

2. Modification of the MPP policy

Joe Biden does not fully agree with the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), also known as “Remain in Mexico”.

This policy states that when immigrants arrive at the US borders and want to apply for asylum, they must remain at Mexico’s borders while waiting for a response to their immigration requests.

The MPP policy has generated many negative consequences and Biden wants to restructure that action plan.

3. DACA

The Trump administration has repeatedly attempted to remove the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

However, the US Supreme Court of Justice recently ruled in favor of DACA and President Trump wants to continue trying to remove this benefit offered to immigrants.

Joe Biden wants to continue implementing DACA. He wants to protect thousands of immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
