U.S. Agencies Change Certain Terms When Referring to Immigrants

The Biden administration orders immigration entities to change certain terminology

Biden supports multicultural diversity

The political identity of the current president of the US, Joe Biden, is strongly related to the immigration sector. In his opinion, the local immigration system urgently needs a reform and restructuring of most existing processes and alternatives available to different immigrant communities.

In fact, when the Biden administration refers to a comprehensive immigration reform, it alludes to the need to remove restrictions implemented by the previous administration (with Donald Trump leading) and transform both known policies and programs, as well as certain meticulous or nearly invisible aspects of the immigration sector.

One of the reasons why the Biden administration wants to reform the entire immigration system is to reduce racial discrimination and social division, and be able to pave the way to incentivize multicultural inclusion and boost the economy with the help of foreign workforce.

The Biden administration orders immigration entities to change certain terminology

As part of the action plan to integrate immigrant communities and avoid “dehumanizing or degrading” policies, the Biden administration’s senior officials ordered two of the largest immigration agencies to remove certain terms when referring to immigrants or when issuing an official statement involving immigrant communities.

The two agencies involved are:

  • CBP (Customs and Border Protection) – Read memo here.
  • ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) – Read memo here.

Let’s look at some examples of new terminology these entities must implement during their communication practices from now on:

  • Instead of using the word “alien”, the Biden administration encourages immigration officials to use the term “non-citizen” or “migrant.
  • Instead of using the term “illegal alien”, the Biden administration encourages immigration officials to use the term “undocumented non-citizen” or “undocumented individual”.
  • Also, instead of using the word “assimilation”, the Biden administration encourages immigration officials to use the term “integration” or “civic integration”.

This is undoubtedly a very positive decision for immigrant communities, even more so considering that these two entities are in charge of enforcing immigration law both at the borders and within the US.
