Two New Facilities for Immigrant Minors

The Biden administration opens two facilities for immigrant minors

Biden faces a crossroads due to the current border situation

During the last weeks, especially since February 2021, CBP (Customs and Border Protection) has reported a substantial increase in the number of immigrant minors crossing the borders of the US unaccompanied and without legal documentation, which is sparking and fueling a growing controversy among the American population and members of the government.

In fact, as of March 8, CBP had in its custody more than 3,200 immigrant minors, and many of them have been in CBP facilities for more than 72 hours, which is the time allowed by local law. Usually, minors must be transferred to HHS (Department of Health and Human Services) facilities after being detained by border forces.

It is well known that the current administration of the US, headed by President Joe Biden, wants to reform the immigration system, but is currently facing a gigantic challenge due to the surge of illegal border crossings, which could be an obstacle to promote comprehensive immigration overhaul.

The Biden administration is working against the clock and has tried to mitigate the impact of irregular immigration on the country’s southern border, reopening HHS centers to pre-pandemic levels and organizing its team to streamline the process so that immigrant minors can be transferred to a sponsor or family member within the US.

Adding to that, the Biden administration recently rescinded a policy that affected immigrant child caregivers, who picked up minors at HHS centers and could be tracked by border forces. The current administration stated that immigrants who pick up minors at official facilities will not be at risk of deportation.

To improve the situation at the borders, lessen social controversy and provide better conditions for unaccompanied immigrant minors, the Biden administration is opening two new shelters in Texas to temporarily house minors.

This is an emergency measure to prevent immigrant children from exceeding the time allowed by law at border patrol stations or other non-HHS facilities.
