Trump’s Immigration Policies Could Last After Elections

DHS officers state Trump's immigration policies will last after the elections

Current immigration policies

The recent history of the US has seen two governments with a diametrically opposite position when it comes to the immigration sector.

On the one hand, former President Barack Obama had welcoming immigration ideals and, in fact, implemented multiple benefits for immigrants, including undocumented foreigners. For instance, during his term, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was implemented, which protects immigrants, who came to the US as minors, from deportation.

On the other hand, current president, Donald Trump, has a fairly strict vision regarding immigration, both legal and illegal. His government has tried to curb immigration, especially illegal, at all costs and has implemented more than 400 changes in the immigration sector, which increase the restrictions and requirements for foreigners to be able to come the US.

In the opinion of the Trump administration, reducing immigration would benefit the economic, social and health system. In addition to that, if the number of foreigners entering the country decreases, the American population would have more job opportunities available and the unemployment rate would decrease.

The global pandemic contributed to curb immigration

The sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic forced governments around the world to implement emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the health crisis.

In the case of the US, the Trump administration decided to implement multiple emergency measures that directly affect the immigration sector.

Therefore, the global pandemic undoubtedly contributed to the current government increasing restrictions on the local immigration system. In fact, in the opinion of dozens of critics and activists, the Trump administration used the sanitary emergency as an “excuse to fulfill its anti-immigration agenda.”

The Trump administration policies could endure

According to a recent report by CBS News, officials from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) hope that immigration policies implemented by the Trump administration in recent years will last beyond the presidential elections, which will take place in November, 2020.

DHS officials state that if President Trump does not win re-election, his modifications in the immigration sector would be difficult to remove since some changes are deeply rooted in minor policies and several cases have already reached the US’ Supreme Court of Justice, which makes them more difficult to revoke.

The CBS immigration reporter mentions that there are quite strict policies such as the Migrant Protection Protocol (MPP), which forces asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until they have a hearing with a local judge.
