Trump’s Administration Could Deny Entry of Legal Residents

Trump plans to deny entry to legal residents if pose a threat to public health

The government’s reaction to the pandemic

It is clear that the massive outbreak of Coronavirus took governments around the world by surprise. As a result, they had to act quickly and implement sudden action plans that would help cushion the impact of the pandemic.

Apart from the health emergency, the global pandemic has also generated economic, social and political crisis in dozens of countries. That is the case in the US, the main epicenter and the country most affected by the COVID-19.

The Trump administration has implemented a considerable amount of emergency measures intended to alleviate the current crisis. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The closure of borders.
  • Stimulus checks.
  • Suspension of work visa applications for qualified foreigners.
  • Suspension of Green Card or permanent residence applications.
  • Expansion of infrastructures for the health sector.
  • Hospitals dedicated exclusively to the treatment of people infected with Coronavirus.
  • Express deportations, including unaccompanied minors.

Many of the emergency measures implemented by the current administration of the US are directly related to the immigration sector.

This has generated a gigantic controversy in the country because the Trump administration is characterized by its views on immigration and its intention to reduce it. Therefore, dozens of activists have declared that the president is using the health crisis to fulfill his “anti-immigration agenda”.

A new measure could prevent the entry of legal residents

In light of the threat posed by the global Coronavirus pandemic, governments around the world encouraged their citizens to return to their homes before the borders closure.

Many countries still offer humanitarian flights to bring back their citizens from abroad. In this way, populations can use local medical services and avoid precarious situations in other nations.

However, in the case of the US, the Trump administration plans to implement a new emergency measure that could temporarily prohibit the entry of US citizens, as well as Green Card or legal residence holders.

The current government could deny legal residents entry into the country if they pose a threat to the local population. For instance:

  • Coronavirus symptoms.
  • Flu symptoms.
  • Any other virus that could be potentially pandemic.
  • If they have tested positive for the Coronavirus, they must be in mandatory isolation for at least 14 days before entering the US.

The decision to prevent the entry of legal residents would be entirely up to border forces. Their judgment would be essential in determining whether they have symptoms related to the COVID-19.

This emergency measure has not yet been approved and is under evaluation.

Dozens of activists say this is another attempt by the Trump administration to expand restrictions on the immigration sector and isolate the US from the rest of the world.
