The USCIS Completes Initial H-1B Visa Selection Process

The USCIS has already completed the initial H-1B visa registration process

Highly Skilled Foreign Workers in the US

The US’ immigration system is quite broad and can even be complex. Immigration alternatives vary from humanitarian programs for vulnerable communities such as asylum seekers and refugees, to programs based on family ties, study or employment.

Aside from being the destination for thousands of migrants fleeing risky situations such as persecution, violence or war, the US also attracts talent from abroad through visa programs for professionals and international students.

One of the most important programs for local companies and foreign workers is the H-1B visa program, which is a way for highly qualified workers to gain experience in the US in essential fields such as science, technology, engineering and research.

Through the H-1B visa program, American or US-based companies can hire staff from abroad as long as there are no trained local workers to fill the position. That is one of the reasons why this program is extremely important for the socio-economic development of local businesses.

Annually, the USCIS (US Citizenship and Immigration Services) grants 65,000 H-1B visas to highly skilled foreign workers. Adding to that, there are also 20,000 available positions for H-1B advanced degree exemption or master’s cap, which do not fall within the annual limit and benefit certain foreigners with a master’s degree (or higher) from an eligible institution of the US.

The USCIS has already completed the initial H-1B visa registration process

Since the number of H-1B visa applications usually exceeds the annual limit, the USCIS implemented in 2020 an electronic registration process prior to official applications, which allows applicants (local employers and registrants) to complete a basic initial registration process, where they must submit information about the petitioner and each foreign worker.

The official selection process takes place after the initial electronic registration period, which has been quite efficient as it saves time, effort and costs.

According to a recent statement, the USCIS has already received enough initial H-1B visa applications for fiscal year 2022 and successfully completed the electronic registration process, which took place between March 9 and March 25, 2021.

This means that applicants selected through the initial electronic registration process can submit their official H-1B visa application as of April 1, 2021.
