The US multiplies ads in other territories to curb illegal immigration

On Monday, March 22, 2021, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki stated that the Biden administration is multiplying ads in Latin American countries, including Brazil, sending a direct and clear message to migrants from these countries who plan reach the US borders without legal documentation. The ads clarify that the country’s borders are currently closed due to the health crisis and that this is not the right time to come without documentation.

Psaki openly stated, “we’ve placed an estimated 17,118 radio ads in Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras since January 21st in Spanish, Portuguese, and six indigenous languages”. According to the Press Secretary, these ads will reach an audience of approximately 15 million people.

Apart from radio and other media, the Biden administration is sending the same message to undocumented migrants who plan to cross the US borders without prior authorization through social networks such as Facebook and Instagram, which have already reached more than 73 million Latin American citizens.

This strategy came after border forces such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) reported a growing number of undocumented immigrants apprehended at the borders in recent weeks, including thousands of unaccompanied immigrant minors, which naturally sparks a colossal controversy among the American population regarding President Biden’s immigration policies.

Biden’s immigration projects are at risk if the situation at the borders does not improve

Due to the surge of illegal border crossings, the Biden administration faces a huge crossroads. On the one hand, the current president of the US must fulfill his immigration promises, which are quite welcoming, and, on the other hand, he must also enforce immigration law at the country’s borders.

For now, the Biden administration’s priority is to control the situation at the borders and reduce irregular immigration to pave the way and be able to reform the entire immigration system, which will need the unconditional support of the American population and members of Congress.

However, the current situation at the borders is putting Biden’s immigration plans at risk as a part of the American population and several opposition groups blame his administration for the substantial increase in apprehensions at the borders.

The Biden administration hopes the ad strategy will work to send a clear message to immigrant communities and reduce irregular immigration as soon as possible.
