The US Deported Newborns to Mexico

Investigation reveals the Trump administration deported newborn Americans

Expedited deportations on grounds of health emergency

The sudden arrival of the global Coronavirus pandemic undoubtedly allowed the Trump administration to implement so-called “express removals,” which refer to the power granted to border forces to deport undocumented immigrants in a matter of hours in times of crisis.

This unconventional emergency measure allows entities such as CBP (Customs and Border Protection) to deport immigrants, who try to cross the US borders without prior authorization, without following regular protocols and without giving them the opportunity to present their applications, despite the fact that many of them need international protection.

Several critics and activists state that former President Donald Trump and his cabinet used the sanitary emergency as an excuse to fulfill their “anti-immigration agenda” and deported thousands of people under the premise of a health crisis, which tremendously affected vulnerable populations and territories.

Since March 2020, amid a global health crisis unprecedented in recent history, the Trump administration deported thousands of immigrants to Mexico and other vulnerable countries, which do not have enough resources to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and protect people in need of international assistance. With this, we refer not only to adult undocumented immigrants, but also unaccompanied immigrant minors, entire families and pregnant women or with newborns, which naturally caught the attention of immigrant rights advocates and humanitarian organizations.

Investigation reveals the Trump administration deported newborn Americans

An investigation recently conducted by The Guardian and The Fuller Project reveals that the Trump administration deported at least 11 newborn American citizens to Mexico without a birth certificate amid the global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under local law, people born in the US are, by right, American citizens, regardless of whether their parents are immigrants or whether they hold a legal residence permit or not. However, on grounds of health emergency, border forces deported newborns without guaranteeing their American nationality.

The current number of women deported with their newborns without a birth certificate is 11, but several immigration advocates and attorneys state that the real number could be higher since the Trump administration failed to adequately follow up on “express removals” carried out amid the global pandemic, making it difficult to help immigrants deported since the beginning of 2020.

It is worth mentioning that former President Donald Trump commented on multiple occasions about newborns in the US, who are the children of undocumented immigrants, calling them “anchor babies.” According to the former president’s opinion, undocumented foreigners use “anchor babies” as a strategy to reside and work in the US, and also apply to social benefits on behalf of children born in the country, a premise that has been previously contradicted by experts and critics.
