The Trump Government Pressure on Immigration Reaches Central America

Central America is detaining undocumented immigrants before reaching the US

The Trump administration’s ideals regarding immigration

Since President Donald Trump took office in 2017, one of his main purposes has been to reduce the number of foreigners entering the country annually. With this, we mean that the current administration does not fully agree with mass immigration, both legal and illegal.

Clearly, the Trump administration’s efforts are primarily focused on eradicating illegal immigration at all costs. In the president’s view, undocumented immigrants often:

  • Use local benefits excessively.
  • Promote clandestine work.
  • Avoid mandatory annual taxes.
(It is important to clarify that a large portion of undocumented immigrants pay taxes, yearning to apply for legal residence permits.)
  • Violate local law by crossing borders without prior authorization, waiting to submit an immigration application within the US.

Therefore, the Trump administration believes that undocumented immigrants should not, under any circumstances, have the opportunity to apply for a legal residence permit as that would only incentivize more immigrants to cross borders unlawfully.

It is imperative to recognize that the last two governments of the US have had a different view when it comes to the immigration sector. The Trump administration has a fairly strict stance and has removed multiple benefits offered to immigrants, arguing that local resources should be available for the American population.

That is why for the past three and a half years, the Trump government has tried to use all the tools at its disposal to curb illegal immigration, mainly from Central America.

Alliances between the Trump administration and Central American countries

The current administration of the US assures that the reason why Central American citizens decide to migrate illegally is due to a lack of quality of life, job opportunities and social security.

On the one hand, the Trump administration has offered, on several occasions, donations to Central American countries to invest in quality of life and to commit to reducing illegal immigration from their territories.

On the other hand, the Trump administration has also threatened countries that do not cooperate with the goal of reducing illegal immigration to the US. Some of the threats include an increase in import tariffs, migration barriers for countries that do not collaborate with the cause, inter alia. In addition to that, the Trump administration used this strategy against countries that refused to receive deportation flights during the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus.

Central American governments feel pressure from the US

Thousands of undocumented immigrants recently started a caravan from Honduras, with the purpose of reaching the US to request political asylum.

This is not the first time that there is a caravan of this type. However, Central American governments had never been strict on this issue until the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Therefore, more than 3,000 Hondurans have been detained in Guatemala (many of them have already been deported) under the premise that a caravan represents a threat to public health as the sanitary crisis is still present.

However, dozens of activists state that Central American countries are halting migrant caravans due to pressure from the Trump administration and its constant threats. They argue that it is important to understand that immigrants choose the US as destination due to lack of opportunities in their countries.
