The Relationship Between Crime and Undocumented Immigrants

Study finds undocumented immigrants do not increase crime rate

The Trump administration’s view on immigration

President Donald Trump used immigration as a key piece for his political campaign to win the 2016 elections. His administration has substantially transformed the local immigration system, implementing rules, policies and measures that restrict and hinder processes for foreigners to come to the US.

President Trump has focused heavily on curbing illegal immigration and has repeatedly linked undocumented immigrants to crime, a premise that has been contradicted by investigations and official figures.

In fact, in one of our most recent articles, we talk about a poll conducted by Gallup, which reveals that 42% of the American population still links immigration to crime. However, post-survey analysis shows that lack of reliable sources and particular political ideals generate this type of assumptions among the local population, which are erroneous and have no validity, they are only an opinion.

The fact that the president of the US connects crime with immigration, makes most of his followers trust this opinion and think in the same way. However, if local citizens, regardless of their political beliefs, seek information from reliable sources, they will find that official figures contradict this view and that the impact of immigration on the local economy is tremendously more important than the current government believes.

Study finds undocumented immigrants do not increase crime rate

Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the US (PNAS) released a report on December 7, 2020, called “Comparing crime rates between undocumented immigrants, legal immigrants, and native-born US citizens in Texas.”

The PNAS research analyzes the impact of undocumented immigrants on the crime rate in one of the states with the most immigrant communities. Adding to that, it is important to prove if the Trump administration’s opinion is valid since it has implemented hundreds of changes in the local immigration system taking the premise of crime as a pillar, but it has never been fully proven.

It is imperative to clarify that the PNAS report compares crime figures in relation to US citizens, legal immigrants and undocumented immigrants, analyzing the crime rate per 100,000 people.

Let’s look at some important findings from 2012 to 2018:

  • In assault cases, US citizens represent 160.9, legal immigrants 131.6, and undocumented immigrants only 77.8.
  • In theft cases, US citizens represent 99.7, legal immigrants 54.9 and undocumented immigrants only 19.7.
  • Regarding property crime, US citizens represent 165.2, legal immigrants 98.2, and undocumented immigrants only 38.5.

Broadly speaking, the results of the investigation reveal that the opinion of the Trump administration regarding undocumented immigrants and crime has no validity as official figures show otherwise. The study shows that, if this happens in Texas, a state with a high number of undocumented immigrants as it is a border area, the results will be similar or even lower in other states, indicating that undocumented immigrants do not increase the local crime rate.

In fact, PNAS states: “Our findings help us understand why the most aggressive immigrant removal programs have not delivered on their crime reduction promises and are unlikely to do so in the future.”
