The Biden Government Postpones Immigration Executive Actions

The Biden administration delayed executive actions on the immigration sector

Biden vowed to reverse Trump’s immigration restrictions

It is no secret that immigration in the US was tremendously restricted during the last four years, under the Donald Trump administration. The former president usually referred to immigration with a negative connotation, relating it to crime, unemployment and social insecurity, although he almost never cited reliable sources. These comments referred more to a personal opinion than to verifiable facts.

The American population changed the future of immigration over the next four years by electing Joe Biden as the 46th president of the US, despite former President Trump seeking re-election.

Biden took office on January 20, 2021 and, unlike Trump, states that immigration is a strength and an advantage for the local market, American or US-based companies, international competitiveness, technological and scientific development, and the country’s ability to overcome the current crisis.

Therefore, during his political campaign, President Biden repeatedly mentioned the need to reform the local immigration system, initially removing Trump’s restrictions, and then expanding alternatives for immigrant communities, also taking into account the national interest and the American population.

The Biden administration delayed executive actions on the immigration sector

During the first day in office, the Biden administration reversed multiple restrictions on the immigration system. However, there is still a long way to go as the former president implemented more than 400 changes on immigration, which significantly restricted and hampered legal processes.

On Friday, January 29, the Biden administration was to issue several executive actions to repair damages caused by the Trump administration. However, according to sources close to the White House, these changes are delayed “by at least a few days.” However, the current administration of the US did not comment on reasons why these executive actions on the immigration system were delayed.

Some of them include, but are not limited to:

  • Action plans and strategies to reunite immigrant families separated at the borders under Trump’s “Zero Tolerance Policy”. This policy states that undocumented adults should face criminal prosecution for crossing borders without legal documentation. However, the US law protects immigrant minors and, naturally, they cannot face legal charges. Therefore, this policy led to the separation of at least 3,000 minors from their parents, and hundreds of them have not been able to find them after more than three years.
  • Improve the refugee program in the US by increasing the annual cap, removing Trump’s restrictions, and expanding alternatives for this vulnerable population.
  • Several executive actions related to the political asylum process, such as rescinding the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP) or “Remain in Mexico” and suspending the Asylum Cooperation Agreements (ACAs) with the Northern Triangle of Central America (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador).
