The Biden Administration Unveils Immigration Blueprint

Biden releases 21-point plan to improve the immigration system

Biden’s strong intention to reform the immigration system

It is no secret that former President Donald Trump’s administration made a series of changes that substantially transformed the US immigration system. The previous administration’s goal was to reduce immigration levels by limiting the humanitarian alternatives available to the most vulnerable immigrant communities, restricting certain immigration programs, and increasing eligibility requirements for all kinds of foreign populations.

Former President Trump planned to curtail immigration even further during his second term. However, in November 2020, the American population elected Democratic candidate Joe Biden as the 46th president of the US, who has been leading the White House since late January 2021.

Unlike the Trump administration, the Biden administration has a rather welcoming and modern view regarding immigration. In fact, during his first six months in office, the current president of the US has removed a large number of restrictions, rules and limitations implemented by Trump on the immigration system, expanded several immigration programs and, during his first days as president, sent an extensive immigration bill to Congress.

The Biden administration’s goal is to reform the entire immigration system, which is clearly a very difficult endeavor due to the Trump administration’s policies and the fact that Congress has not passed comprehensive immigration reform since the 80s. Nevertheless, President Biden remains optimistic regarding his immigration promises.

Biden releases 21-point plan to improve the immigration system

Although the Biden administration is facing multiple challenges regarding immigration, it still continues to propose alternatives to improve the local immigration system and repair the damage caused by the Trump administration on the most vulnerable immigrant communities.

As a matter of fact, on Tuesday, July 27, Biden unveiled a blueprint, which aims to build a “Fair, Orderly and Humane Immigration System”. In the fact sheet, the Biden administration lays out a 21-point immigration plan, which prioritizes:

  • Immigration law enforcement at the borders without violating human rights. This includes redirecting and reorganizing existing resources to enforce immigration law at the border and curb irregular migration at all costs.
  • Improve conditions for political asylum application processing. This includes reducing the backlog of immigration cases and waiting times nationwide, and streamlining the political asylum process.
  • Create regional cooperation strategies to reduce irregular migration from Central America. This includes providing humanitarian, monetary or social assistance to improve living conditions for Central American citizens.

The Biden administration explains that this project is another step to “continue implementing the President’s transformative vision for a 21st century immigration system (…) Success in building this fair, orderly, and humane immigration system won’t be achieved overnight, especially after the prior Administration’s irrational and inhumane policies”.

However, it is worth mentioning that the Biden administration makes it clear that in order to implement lasting policies and profound changes to the local immigration system, Congress must intervene in certain legislation and pave the way for comprehensive immigration reform.
