Biden’s proposals to promote comprehensive immigration reform

Immigration has always been a fairly relevant issue for the administrations of the US and the local population. However, there are administrations that consider essential to pay attention to other sectors before acting on the immigration system.

Interestingly, the last two administrations have viewed immigration as a first-hand issue that needs full attention. On the one hand, former President Donald Trump implemented hundreds of changes to the immigration system with the intention of narrowing alternatives available to foreigners and reducing the number of immigrants entering the US annually. On the other hand, current president Joe Biden plans to expand alternatives for foreigners to come to the country, arguing that immigration is necessary for the local economic system.

Thus, since President Biden took office on January 20, 2021, his administration has focused heavily on lifting Trump’s restrictions on immigration in order to promote the first comprehensive immigration reform of the 21st century.

In fact, on his first day in office, President Biden introduced an immigration bill for Congress approval, which proposes, among other things:

  • A path to citizenship for millions of immigrants currently residing in the US undocumented.
  • Permanent protection for Dreamers, who are young immigrants who came to the US without legal documentation when they were minors.
  • Improve border surveillance and protection through more sophisticated methods such as high-quality technology.

Recognized companies applaud Biden for his immigration reform

Several recognized companies, belonging mainly to the technology sector, have raised their voices to support the Biden administration for introducing an immigration bill, promoting comprehensive reform and protecting local companies, which benefit greatly from foreign workforce.

Among proposals to improve the immigration system, the Biden administration plans to remove per country limits for employment-based Green Card applications. It is important to clarify that the Green Card grants legal permanent residence to eligible immigrants, in this case, to foreign workers who meet mandatory requirements.
