Several Institutions ask the Biden Government to Issue Student Visas

Coalition of institutions ask the current administration to allow new foreign students

Delays in immigration processes affect educational institutions in the US

The US immigration system is currently overloaded due to a backlog of immigration cases of all kinds, from applications for humanitarian programs such as political asylum, to applications based on employment or study.

There are multiple variants that have substantially delayed immigration processes and are mainly related to current policies, restrictions implemented by the previous administration or the health crisis caused by the Coronavirus pandemic and its global impact on immigration.

One of the sectors most affected by the backlog of immigration cases is education. This is because the economic stability of dozens of universities and colleges in the US relies heavily on the enrollment of foreign students. In fact, the annual investment of international students in the American education sector ranges between $40 and $50 billion.

Thanks to the investment of foreign students, local institutions have the possibility of offering subsidies and other benefits to American students. Adding to that, many of them, upon completing their higher education, become highly skilled workers, which helps keep the country’s economy afloat.

Coalition of institutions asks the current administration to allow new foreign students

In New York State, a group of 17 higher education institutions sent a letter to the Secretary of State and the Secretary of DHS (Department of Homeland Security), asking to open more consulates to process F-1 visas for international students.

Usually, for foreigners to obtain an F-1 visa, they must attend a face-to-face interview and demonstrate that they meet certain eligibility requirements. The leaders of these 17 institutions are urging the Biden administration to suspend face-to-face interviews or adopt virtual methods to allow international students to enroll in American universities or schools in the fall of 2021.

They state that given the current waiting times for most immigration programs, including student visas, it is a first-hand need to expedite immigration programs around the world to boost the economy in times of crisis.

The institutions involved in the case declare that it is essential to reopen consulates and embassies in China and India, understanding that a high portion of foreign students enrolled in educational institutions of the US comes from these nations. Adding to that, they openly state, “Their contributions are evident in practically every sector of American society, bringing us discoveries, innovation, artistic creativity, and economic vibrancy.”
