Senator Urges Congress to Pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform

California Senator supports comprehensive immigration reform

California’s first Latino Senator Alex Padilla, who succeeded Vice President Kamala Harris, is promoting comprehensive immigration reform in Congress even though he has only been in office for four months. Padilla states that it is the right time to reshape the immigration system considering that Democratic members are leading Congress (slim majority) and there is a Democratic president leading the White House.

In fact, to promote comprehensive reform, Padilla openly states that “There’s a new majority in the U.S. Senate. It’s a bare majority, but a majority nonetheless (…) The timing is right to make significant progress”. The Democratic Senator comments on the importance of offering a path to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants and of carrying out efficient strategies to reduce the backlog of pending immigration cases, which is quite large.

It is no secret that there are currently several immigration bills under congressional review, including Biden’s ambitious proposal, which, if passed, would substantially transform the immigration system, most existing processes and the nation’s approach to the immigration sector in general.

However, Padilla specifically mentions an immigration bill initially introduced in 2013, which, in his opinion, might be a good start for Congress to help restructure the local immigration system.

Immigration on the American public’s radar

Senator Padilla is not the only member of Congress who has emphasized the need to reform the immigration system. In fact, several immigration bills currently under review have been introduced or reintroduced by members of the US House of Representatives.

Adding to that, immigration has always been a controversial topic in the US, but it is drawing the attention of the American public now more than ever. This is primarily because immigration is a priority for the current administration, led by President Joe Biden, who took office in late January 2021.

Other than that, the country is facing a surge of illegal border crossings that has also made national news over the past four months, sparking an even greater social controversy around the immigration sector.
